🕳 Explore the Lava River Cave

A mile-long lava tube in Deschutes National Forest.

A mile-long lava tube formed by a Newberry Volcano eruption ~80,000 years ago. You walk into the earth on a paved-and-then-rough path, and it's pitch-black inside — the cave has its own ecosystem with year-round cold. Real explorer-feel with no special skills required.

Good to know

  • Bring two flashlights per person — phone lights aren't enough.
  • Wear warm layers; cave is 42°F year-round.
  • $5 day-use fee. Lantern rental at the entrance ($5).
  • Open mid-May through mid-October.

Google's editorial: Discovered in 1889, this cave in a mile-long lava tube offers self-guided tours.
