Steelhead Falls is on the Middle Deschutes, ~10 minutes from CRR. The Steelhead Falls trailhead is also one of the three CRR-area BLM trailheads (along with Otter Bench on the Crooked, and Scout Camp on the Middle Deschutes a bit farther downstream). Fishing the pools above and below the falls, plus the runs along the trail, is a popular near-the-park option that doesn't require a hike-in epic.

Good to know

  • Species: Wild redband rainbow trout primarily; occasional brown trout in deeper holes; bull trout possible (release).
  • Access: Drive 10 min from CRR to the Steelhead Falls trailhead, then walk 0.5 mi to the falls. Fishable pools both above and below.
  • Tackle: Light-to-medium rod. Standard middle Deschutes flies (caddis, mayflies, small streamers) or small spinners.
  • Best times: Morning + evening hatches in summer; midday in winter.
  • Regulations: Middle Deschutes regulations vary by section and season. Always verify current ODFW Central Zone rules before fishing — limits, bait restrictions, and seasonal closures change.
  • Note: Steelhead Falls is also a popular swimming spot in summer; fishing pressure is lower in the morning before swimmers arrive.
